概要
This course covers the basic concepts of modern astronomy/astrophysics which is intended for students who have a basic understanding of classical (Newtonian) mechanics. The lectures will cover applications of mechanics, fundamental concepts in classical mechanics, and a brief introduction to modern physics. We will study the principles of physics and their relationship to the real world, with a particular emphasis on astrophysical phenomena, by following the historical development of physics. The course will also introduce the principles of relativity and quantum physics, which are crucial in modern physics and necessary for understanding the evolution of the universe and stars.
目標
Classical mechanics, which is based on three Newton's laws, successfully describes many phenomena in the universe: from motions around our daily life to movements of terrestrial objects. This course aims to provide students with a broad perspective on natural science through studying fundamental physics, including applications of classical mechanics. Regarding the fundamentals of mechanics, students are required to solve problems at a standard level. We will cover only basic concepts and outlines in the lecture for advanced subjects. Students are expected to have basic knowledge of mathematics (high school and mathematics at the first-year university level).
授業外の学習
Students should read parts of reference books before the lecture. Reviewing the course material of each class is especially important. Solving exercises during self-study is highly recommended.
