(2) Others (40%): They will be required to submit the draft of their translation and questions before class via Moodle. Submitted assignments will be used as discussion materials and shared with other students. Those who miss five classes for any reason will not receive credit for the course. 詳細情報
概要
This language-intensive seminar will provide students with an opportunity to read and engage with a variety of primary and secondary sources in Japanese history and literature. Through reading texts written before the early 20th century, it will introduce students to the basic methodologies of reading Japanese texts in accordance with their historical contexts and linguistic milieus. Any student who wants to read Japanese texts written between the Nara and early Shōwa periods is welcome. The readings will be tailored to students’ research interests and needs; therefore, the planned class schedule is subject to change. If you have some Japanese sources you need assistance in reading, or if you come up with a text you want to read in class, you are welcome to bring it. If there is no particular preference, we will read school textbooks and how-to handbooks of various periods, which provide a natural and sequential approach to how premodern written Japanese was learned by people of the time. While the content and the depth of discussion will depend on the reading level of the attendees, in principle, we will read texts aloud in Japanese and then explicate them in English. Through these assignments, we will learn the basic grammar and vocabulary of premodern Japanese and the differences in styles and transformations of the language over time. If needed, we will work on grammar exercises in classical Japanese as well. The class will also provide students with basic training in investigating the nature and the background of sources, historical people, places, and events. Students are required to register for the course on Moodle. Please find "JS750 Reading in Japanese Sources (2024 Fall)" on Moodle and enroll yourself (link provided below).
目標
The objectives of the course depend on the level and needs of the students. If they are new to reading Japanese texts written before the 1940s, their goals will be the following. 1) Become able to read texts written in pre-WWII orthography. 2) Acquire basic grammatical knowledge and vocabulary for reading premodern Japanese. 3) Acquire basic knowledge about reference tools for reading Japanese sources.
