概要

The course will present to the students a more detailed and in-depth look at the relations between the countries of the Eastern and Southeastern Europe and the countries of the East Asia region in the XXth century. The main countries of the East Asian region that will be considered are Japan, the People's Republic of China and the countries of the Korean Peninsula (DPRK and Republic of Korea). The lectures will be built entirely on the basis of different kind of of documents from various archives. The main part of the course will cover the Cold War period, when there is an essential dynamics of the relations between Eastern Europe and the DPRK, the People's Republic of China and Japan (from the 1960s onwards). Each of these countries has its own specific interests and driving forces that will be traced and discussed in class. There is a particular dynamics after the mid-1960s, as a result of the Sino-Soviet split. Special attention within the course will be paid to the relations between Japan and the countries of Eastern and South-Eastern Europe before and after the World War II. The relations between Japan and the countries of Eastern Europe are strongly related to Japan-Soviet relations after the WWII. The historical events and processes will be reviled and analyzed on the basis of rich documentary fundament related to the political, economic and cultural relations between Japan and Eastern Europe, as well as the specific relations between Japan and Yugoslavia, which is also part of the region, but practically outside the direct influence of the USSR.

目標

To enable the students to understand the development and the dynamics of the of political, economic and cultural relations between the countries from the region of Eastern Europe (including the Balkans) and the countries from the East Asia region. To help students understand the process as well as the specific factors, ideological controversy as well as specific interests having the most important impact on the development of relations between the countries of Eastern Europe and those of East Asia. To enable the students to analyze, explain and critically discuss some of the available primary sources as well as to be aware of the main studies on the on the topics that will be covered during the course. To let the students demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the driving forces behind the relations between Eastern Europe and East Asia in different historical epochs during the XXth century. To give students skills to discuss and critically evaluate the historical processes and to understand their importance from the present point of view.

Required readings will be given in the detailed syllabus available on Moodle. Students will have to read the required readings for each week in order to be able to participate in class discussion. They are also strongly encouraged to supplement their mandatory readings with optional material (uploaded on Moodle) and from other sources. ●Preparation of class materials and reading assignments (60 minutes). ●Work on class assignments (60 minutes) ●Review class lecture and do quizzes (70 minutes)

  6. The Cold War in Eastern Europe and East Asia - political, socio-economic and international transformations. Soviet Union and the Civil War in China (1946-1949).
  7. The Development of the Bilateral Relations between China and Eastern Europe in the 1950s and the beginning of 1960s.The Sino-Soviet split and its impact on the relations between China and the countries of Eastern Europe.
  8. Eastern Europe and the Korean War (1950-1953). Eastern Europe and the Korean Unification Issue in the Cold War Period.
