1) Active participation in daily seminar discussions, presentations, etc: 40% 2) Occasional reading responses: 10%. 2) Research Essay: 50% The final paper (or equivalent project) for this class should be roughly 16 pages in length. 3) Regular attendance. Late arrivals, if numerous, will be considered the same as an absence. Any student missing more than two classes (without explanation or receiving permission) will receive a lower final grade. Students who are absent more than four classes should expect to fail. Your grade for the course will depend upon the quality and thoughtfulness of your writing and your contributions to class discussions. Students are free to contact me through email, and I am always willing to make appointments for one-on-one meetings in person or on Zoom.

概要

This course is a graduate seminar in pre-modern Japanese literature. The content will be designed around the research needs of the students interested in taking the class. Past topics have included the following: general surveys of pre-modern Japanese literature; literary representations of gender and sexuality; warriors and warrior culture; imperial court poetry and prose, etc.

目標

Intensive analysis and discussion of literary, historical, and cultural texts of pre-modern Japan.

Students should expect a heavy workload outside of class. Reading Assignments: roughly 360 minutes Writing Assignments (reading responses, final essay, etc.): roughly 60-120 minutes

  2. Classical Waka Poetry: Man'yoshu and Kokin wakashu.

  4. Court Tales: Genji monogatari - Uji chapters, part I
  5. Court Tales: Genji monogatari - Uji chapters, part II
  6. Court Tales: Genji monogatari - Uji chapters, part III
  7. Late Tales: Torikaebaya and Towazugatari
  8. Medieval Setsuwa and Storytelling: Hosshinshu, Kankyo no tomo, various otogizoshi
  9. Early Modern Urban Tales: Nanshoku okagami and Koshoku ichidai onna
  10. Early Modern Theater: two or three puppet plays
  11. Early Modern Urban Tales, part II: Ugetsu monogatari, Shunshoku umegoyomi
  12. The Meiji transition: Koda Rohan, Higuchi Ichiyo
  13. Pre-War Literature: Tanizaki Jun'ichiro
  14. Post-War Literature: Mishima Yukio
