概要

Comparative Literature 1 and 2 introduce students to selected issues in comparative literature. Comparative Literature 1 focuses upon methodological and theoretical issues about a specific theme. All readings (primary and secondary) are available in English. This year, we will consider literary theoretical texts dealing with the issues of “between languages.” In literary history we can find numerous examples in which authors and readers had fluency in multiple languages and worked across different languages. In recent years, literary scholars began to pay renewed attention to the issues related to writing in non-native languages; working with “untranslatable” texts; rethinking the “mother tongue”; and thinking between languages. We will read some classic and recent theoretical texts that broadly deal with these topics, keeping in mind implication in Japanese Studies. * PhD students will follow the curriculum assigned to the MA students in the affiliated class; however, PhD students will be given supplementary readings and assignments appropriate to the requirements for students in the PhD degree program.

目標
