概要

As a powerful instrument and object of social closure, citizenship is an important concept that regulates an individual’s membership to a political and geographic community with its rights and obligations. This seminar examines the concept of citizenship within the context of migration. How does citizenship (not) matter for migrants? How does citizenship affect migration? How does migration affect citizenship? We will review theories of migration and citizenship and try to answer these questions while exploring empirical studies in both established immigrant societies and emerging recipient and sending countries.

目標

By the end of the semester, students in the course should have a firm grasp on the issues and debates surrounding migration and citizenship and be able to develop an individual project which incorporates but goes beyond the class materials.

授業外の学習

I will strive to make the class interactive and you must be involved on a regular basis. My role is to provide you with resources and to assist you in gaining new perspectives and knowledge on gender and migration, but ultimately it is your duty to learn. To this end, I suggest that you come to every class prepared (having completed all the assigned readings) and willing to contribute to our class learning environment.
