GENDER AND POLITICS 1

概要

This seminar provides an overview of the field of “politics and gender” by focusing on the role of women’s leadership in shaping a new social order. Why are there so few women in the leadership positions? Why does it matter? What obstacles do they face? Are there any differences between male and female leaders? What strategies are more likely to increase women leaders? Would women leaders change the current gender order (i.e. patriarchy) or rather reproduce it? How do different variants of feminism support or oppose women’s participation in the public sphere? Under what visions and conditions, would women leaders bring about a social transformation toward a more equal and just society? This seminar explores these questions by critically reading the texts and conducting a research on particular cases that students choose.

目標

The seminar shall enable students to get acquainted with classic literature on gender and politics, as well as cutting-edge research. By critically reading those texts, students will understand how scholarly debates have evolved and where this particular field of research is headed. They will be required to write a book review as well as a final paper.

All students are required to do all of the assigned readings and come to all seminar sessions ready to participate actively in discussions.
