概要

Social work discourses in Japan mainly focus on the domestic, even though we live in an interdependent world. Social work serves people's life, and, especially, International social work considers people's well-being equally transnationally. The class will discuss and think about global issues and people's life. The instructor wants to provide social work students with another point of view from internationally and globally.

目標

The class objective is to learn how to see with the compound eye’s perspective in social work practice. To consider the social work issues in each country, the social worker requires multiple points of view oneself. It is precisely required also in international social work. Students will be required to join positively in discussions during the class.

Students will be expected to read a chapter of the textbook before class.

The impact of “Globalization” on the community: Students will discuss maps.
Definitions of the International Social Work: Using the materials by the instructor and discuss what International Social Work is.
History of International Social Work (-1970s): Review the history of International Social Work
International social work organizations: Review the history of IASSW, IFSW, ICSW and APASWE
Colonialism and the International Social Work education history (the 1970s – the 1990s)
Indigenization of social work education and Internationalization (the 1990s - the2000s)
Global issues and social work
Standardization of social work education and International Social Work (the 2000s -)
Social development and social work
Discussion of "human rights" in the world
Values and ethics for the international professional action
International relief cooperation and social development
Challenges of International Social Work
Conclusion -- New Endeavor to the Interdependent world

教科書

The class will use mainly Akimoto's new book. The class also uses as subtext Healy & Thomas's book entitled "International Social Work 3rd Edition: Professional Action in an Interdependent World." In addition, other resources and articles will be prepared by the lecturer.
