概要

At the time of the introduction of modern education after the Meiji Restoration, Japan, like many developing countries today, was faced with the challenges of expanding the quantity, improving the quality, and improving the management of education. Through a variety of initiatives, however, Japan achieved the spread of basic education in a relatively short period of time. In addition, during the post-World War II reconstruction period, a drastic reform of the education system was carried out while placing the highest priority on the restoration of school education and equal opportunity. These experiences in Japanese education have many implications for educational development in developing countries. This course will summarize Japan's educational experience from the perspective of educational development in developing countries, and discuss how Japan's educational experience can be referred to for the development of developing countries, and what points should be kept in mind when doing so. The history and current status of Japan's international cooperation in the field of education will also be reviewed. This course is one of the three elective courses of JICA-Development Studies Program (Education), which started in April, 2022, in collaboration with JICA (the Japan International Cooperation Agency (for more information, pls see: https://www.sophia.ac.jp/eng/article/news/info/220214_jicaprogram/).
