概要

This class is designed to examine a variety of aspects of transformative experiences. Since L. A. Paul (2014) presented transformative experiences as the notion that concerns the rationality of our self-making agency, its nature, varieties, extent and value has vigorously been discussed. This seminar is designed for students to examine such various aspects of transformative experiences by reading basic reading materials and having critical discussions in the class. The students will be expected to critically consider the nature and varieties of transformative experiences and its relationship to educational environments.

目標

There are two main goals of this course. First, students will acquire the basic understanding of philosophical issues regarding transformative experiences. Second, students will develop a competence to critically consider the issues by actively participating in class discussions.

授業外の学習

Students are required to read reading materials prior to seminars to actively participate in class discussions. In each class, a student or two must prepare a handout for the summary of the argument in reading material. Students must present a term paper in the last class. In preparation, they are required to survery the literature on topics in this class and relate it to their own research project.

教科書

It is desirable for students to prepare L. A. Paul's Transformative Experiences (OUP, 2014) themselves, although this is not mandatory. (There is a Japanese translation, too.) The rest of all the handouts and scanned reading materials are available at Moodle.
