概要

The course will cover aims and functions of children's literature, translation theory particularly relevant to children's literature, the cultural pressures on translation and translators, and will involve a variety of text analysis and trial translation. Translation will be considered as an artistic activity, an economic activity, and as a cultural activity.

目標

To understand the roles of translation in children's literature. To understand major theories of translation relevant to children's literature. To discuss and analyse a variety of translations. Please not that the translations we will examine in class will mostly be between Japanese and English, but for discussion purposes any cultural and linguistic situations are possible. Students will examine a variety of texts, both picturebooks and novels.

Introduction to children's literature and translation. Note that course content and timing may change in response to student reactions. What is a children's book? Who writes for children, and why? What is important in a children's book?
Translation and the concept of equivalence. Examining translations of example picturebooks.
'For children' depends upon your view of 'children'. Aims of translators.
Polysystem theory.
Norms and laws of translation.
Translation of picturebooks. How is it different? Relating to theory.
Translation and the concept of risk.
Multiple translations, and minority translations.
Translation and performance. How we think about the act of translation, and how that changes judgements.
Humour, intertextuality, cultural content, and excusing changes.
Same language translation. UK to USA.
Practical examples 1. Hiroshima no Pika
Practical Examples 2. Granpa.
Practical examples 3. The Jolly Postman.
