詳細情報
概要
An omnibus lecture series given by 13 frontier scientists invited mainly from National Institute for Environmental Studies (Tsukuba, Japan), which has led environmental studies in Japan. The lecture topics cover a wide range of environmental issues including the global warming, the material recycling, the risk assessment of chemicals, the biodiversity loss, the waste treatment, the protection of mangrove forests, and so on. The fundamental scientific knowledge behind these issues is essential for all students of environmental studies.
目標
To get in touch with the most current researches in environmental studies, and to understand the importance and the relevance of such knowledge for deriving and conducting efficient measures against the environmental problems.
授業外の学習
Writing a short report (reaction paper) on issues presented by each invited lectuerer.
所要時間: The participants are required to spend about 190 minutes for preview and review each class.
スケジュール
- Climate change: global cycles of greenhouse gasses Introduction to geophysical or seismological mechanisms of global warming by greenhouse gass emission. The current status, future projection and relevant measures.
- Climate change: projection of future impacts The future projection of impact by the global warming and its efficient measures will be explained.
- Climate change: mitigation and adaptation The two kinds of feasible measures the international society can take against the global warming, "mitigation and adaptation" will be described.
- E-waste recycling The recycling of small electric devises, the current status and problem to be resoluted, is comprehensively reviewed.
- Domestic wastewater treatment technology The local and decentralized wastewater treatment systems will be introduced and explained especially their technology, efficiency, importance and future development.
- Function and services provided by mangrove ecosystems You can hear from direct field surveys on mangrove ecosystems, on their marvelous services provided to local people, the current status of conservation, and future issues.
- Conservation of tropical rain forest The basic ecological and sociological knowledge on tropical rain forest will be endowed by this lecture. Further investigation on the intimate relationship between local people and ecological services of forest will be presented.
- Conservation of river ecosystems Conservation of fish communities, which have been declining due to development, are introduced with special reference to Hokkaido and Mekong river systems.
- Invasion of exotic species threatening biodiversity A comprehensive description on all aspects surrounding the issues of "invasive exotic species" will be given with a plenty of case studies that the lecturer has been conducting.
- The cancer risk assessment by chemical substances Explanation on the process of cancer development (carcinogenesis) in human body on the basis of molecular biology. The risk assessment method on the carcinogens are also presented.
- Health effects of environmental chemicals Various pollutants' effects on human body will be explained especially with refernce to their modes of action. The front-running research on the epigenetic effects of some pollutants will be also explained.
- Ecological effect of chemical pollutants Recent development of ecotoxicity experiments using water flea (Daphnia magna) and freshwater fish (Oryzias latipes) will be introduced.
- Problems of water pollution A comprehensive lecture on water pollution at wetlands, running water (rivers), and static water (lakes and ponds).
- Soil pollution and ground water pollution The prufication function of soils is explained on the basis of physical and chemical properties of soil. The mechanism which make the ground water pollution hard to resolve will be explained from the perspective of hydrology and soil science.
