概要

This course is for students who want to learn the general basics of teaching English to children. The course will cover the characteristics of preschool to elementary school children's language learning and compare them with those of middle school or adult language leaning. The current situation of English education in Japan will be over-viewed in comparison with those of other countries. Students will learn, practice, and demonstrate activities and tasks particularly used in children's English classes. Students will discuss why and how such activities and tasks are necessary and effective to children in different ages and stages of development. Students will create model lesson plans. Students will visit Japanese schools in-person or online as extracurricular events and will have chances to actually conduct communicative tasks and activities with children. This class is related to THEORIES OF TEACHING ENGLISH TO YOUNG LEARNERS. . Students can take either or both course.

目標

In this course, students will learn the general basics of teaching English to children. They will learn about the characteristics of children’s foreign language teaching/learning. They will learn the current English teaching situation in Japan, in relation with situations in other countries. Students will learn and will be able to demonstrate activities and tasks particularly used in children's English classes. Students will also understand why and how such activities and tasks are necessary and effective to children in different ages and stages of development. Students will be able to create a model lesson plan and demonstrate parts of the lesson as demo-teaching or will be able to conduct communicative tasks and activities with children, through extracurricular events held in-person or online.

授業外の学習

Students are required to research and present on topics related to teaching English to children. Students must learn, design and practice activities and tasks particularly used in children's English classes and be prepared to demonstrate them as teachers. Students are strongly recommended to participate in the extra-curricular events related to teaching English to children coordinated by the instructor. [e.g. observation of kindergarten/ nursery/ elementary school English lessons, voluntary English lessons in kindergarten/ nursery/ elementary school, English day camp, International festival, English role-play events.] The events will be in-person or online. Information of such events will be provided as the program develops.

  1. introduction: explain how each class will be conducted, schedule check, decide textbook. Decide a topic for Groupwork Project for class 3.
  2. English education in Japanese elementary schools: overview and issues. current situation and problems on textbooks, goals and aims, study guidelines of MEXT. Activities; songs, chants, finger-play, sing and dance
  3. Gropwork Project discussion, Q&A session, suggestions for further studies of the topic. Activities; Phonics, learning how to read and write.
  4. Issues in Young learners' English education what are the problems? Are they specific to Japan? Activities; flash cards and card games
  5. Teacher education and teacher training; Who? How? What are the problems? Researched materials by students will be shared in class. Activities: finding/creating effective worksheets
  6. Developing activities:from simple to complicated, more cognitively demanding activities Differences in age and developmental stage Activities; picture books
  7. Curriculum, syllabus, and lesson plan Differences in creating a lesson plan for children’s English classes; age, type of school, number of students, and more. Activities: how to create an effective "introduction section"
  8. demo-teaching (1) Each student will create a lesson plan for a 45 minutes elementary school unit and try out a 15 minutes portion of the lesson. Receive peer feedback on the lesson plan, preparation and demo-teaching.
  9. demo-teaching (2) Each student will create a lesson plan for a 45 minutes elementary school unit and try out a 15 minutes portion of the lesson. Receive peer feedback on the lesson plan, preparation and demo-teaching.
  10. Revise lesson plan through discussion and peer review. Prepare material and practice, rehearse for demo-teaching (3)(4)(5).
  11. demo-teaching (3) Each student will create a revised version of one's lesson plan for a 45 minutes elementary school unit and try out a portion of the lesson. Receive peer feedback on the lesson plan, preparation and demo-teaching.
  12. demo-teaching (4) Each student will create a revised version of one's lesson plan for a 45 minutes elementary school unit and try out a portion of the lesson. Receive peer feedback on the lesson plan, preparation and demo-teaching.
  13. demo-teaching (5) Each student will create a revised version of one's lesson plan for a 45 minutes elementary school unit and try out a portion of the lesson. Receive peer feedback on the lesson plan, preparation and demo-teaching.
  14. wrap-up session reflection and peer evaluation, perspectives to next semester
