概要

This is an introductory course taking up applied linguistics from postmodern perspectives, including sociocultural theory (SCT), posthumanism (PH) and new materialism (NM), specifically looking at connections between second language acquisition (SLA) and materials/artifacts. The course will first start by exploring SCT, and then the discussion will extend to PH and NM. The course will be heavily discussion-based, each session beginning with the summary and responses to the weekly assigned reading. Presenter of the week will be responsible to 1) provide 10 keywords that are taken up in the chapter, explain those keywords and initiate discussions; 2) do an additional reading and present a summary to class, in addition to proposing two discussion questions on the topic that tie (1), (2) and the Japanese EFL context. Lectures will be conducted entirely in English and presentations are to be done in English as well. In addition, students will be expected to write their final course paper in English using the APA format.

目標

In this course, students will: - gain sound understanding in sociocultural theory, including the notions of zpd, internalization, mediation, activity theory, as well as notions in posthumanism and new materialism. - using the acquired knowledge, write a research proposal that is based on a postmodern framework. - cultivate English reading, speaking and writing skills. - be familiarized with APA. - gain research and presentation skills.

授業外の学習

Students are expected to have finished assigned weekly readings at home (i.e., Approx. 30 pages per week) prior to class. Students will be responsible for one presentation for which the student will locate and read an extra material relevant to the week's topic. As the final course paper, students will be designing a research proposal that pertains to postmodern approaches addressing language learning/teaching.
