QUALITATIVE RESEARCH METHODS

概要

This introductory course concentrates on surveying some major qualitative research approaches used in applied linguistics. These include: narrative inquiry, case study, and ethnography (NB: action research is not taken up in this course as there is a separate course on AR). This course also provides some basic ways of collecting qualitative data, including observations, interviews and questionnaires (however, qualitative data analysis is not dealt with in this course). Some philosophical underpinnings in qualitative research are also discussed. The course will be largely discussion-based. For this reason, your active class participation is indispensable. Lectures and discussions will be conducted entirely in English, and students are to do their presentation and write their papers in English as well.

In this course, students will: - gain sound understanding of various qualitative research methods, including narrative inquiry and ethnography. - using the acquired knowledge, write a qualitative research proposal in the discipline of applied linguistics. - will cultivate English reading, speaking and writing skills. - be familiarized with APA. - gain research skills.

授業外の学習

Students are expected to have finished assigned weekly readings at home (i.e., One chapter per week) prior to class. Students will be responsible for one presentation for which the student will locate and read an extra material relevant to the week's topic. As the final course paper, students will be writing a research proposal pertaining to vocabulary teaching/learning. For the topic presentation, students will be providing a brief summary of the proposal.
