概要

In this course, we explore some of the key themes in sociolinguistics and how they relate to TESOL. Specifically we will examine 'which' English and 'whose' English we are aiming to teach, how 'culture' and society affect language use and attitudes, how power issues and ideologies affect language learning and teaching, and how policies are made and implemented to deal with language and educational issues. Students will be required to read an article or book chapter each week and submit their answers to Moodle. Students will also be required to research a sociolinguistics-related topic of their choice and present their findings to the group in preparation for their final report. Details of how to join the first class will be available on Moodle and Loyola.
