CLASSROOM DISCOURSE

概要

Studies on classroom discourse can lead to major improvements in the classroom such as improving student achievement, reducing discrimination in schools and society, and has helped teachers and students to have greater appreciation and understanding of each other. In this class we will cover how the analysis of language used in the classroom can be used to enhance our understanding of teaching, learning and help to improve our individual practices as well as the practices of larger educational institutions. **VERY IMPORTANT: The first class will be held on Zoom. Make sure to get access to the course Moodle page. The Zoom link will be posted on the Moodle page. Log in to Zoom at least 10 minutes early if you are unsure of how to use Zoom. *This course will combine one or more methods from Moodle, ZOOM and others. I suggest that all students should have their own computers and access to fast internet. Please contact the teacher immediately if you need help with this or if you think this could be a problem for you later this semester.

• Students will understand the role that social context plays in classroom discourse. • Students will be able to analyze both teaching and learning practices in actual language use. • Students will be able to describe the basic features of classroom discourse and the functions that they serve.

As a graduate course students will be expected to do an extensive amount of reading and research outside of class.
