概要

It is not uncommon to hear the criticism (or almost a complaint) that the results of research projects rarely have direct practical relevance. One response to such a criticism is to try to focus directly on issues that are obviously important to teachers and learners as well who are actually involved in learning teaching and learning in the classroom. With the practical issues in mind, this course is intended: 1) to bring the importance of researching classroom language teaching to the awareness of in-service and pre-service teachers as well as the students who are interested in second/foreign language learning and teaching; 2) to encourage these participants to become explorers themselves so they may deepen their understanding about their own teaching in the classroom; and 3) to explore the way of rendering the research findings in their own classrooms. In doing so, a number of practical questions will be raised, discussed and empirically explored. The following are some of such questions: 1)Does teaching in the classroom help learners learn EFL (English as a Foreign Language)? 2)Why don’t learners learn what teachers teach? 3) Is error correction helpful? 4)Who creates classroom atmosphere? 5)Is it possible to assess student’s performance in the classroom? 6)Is the process of learning a language in the classroom the same as the process of learning a language outside the classroom? In an effort to find the ways of finding answers to these problems, the course will also offer the chance to practice writing a research report so it may carry an impact to the field exploring the issue of classroom teaching and learning.

目標

By the end of this course, students will be able to: 1) examine their own teaching in the classroom objectively: 2) examine their colleague's teaching objectively and offer useful suggestions for improving his/her teaching in the classroom: 3) use the appropriate instrument to understand the quality of teaching in the classroom choosing from among a range of available instruments: 4) develop their own observation and research instruments, and 5) write a useful and informative research report.

授業外の学習

1) Analyse the data gathered from the classroom observation. 2) Visit a language classroom to observe and record. 3) Develop a topic for micro project. 4) Write a paper reporting on the project.

所要時間: 190 minutes

スケジュール

  1. Introduction: Raising awareness to the importance of research into classroom We will discuss practical problems that teachers may encounter in the classroom by watching a video-recording of an EFL lesson at high school.
  2. Tracing the historical development in classroom research (Allwright & Bailey, 1990, chapter 1) 1) What is classroom research? 2) Where did classroom research come from? 3) How has it developed? 4) What has happened to the early concerns? 5) What has happened to the basic tools?
  3. Purposes of and the scope of classroom research (Allwright & Bailey, 1990, Ch. 3) 1) What topics are covered in classroom research? 2) How do you decide what to investigate? 3) The problem of approach: i) transferability, ii) reliability, iii) validity
  4. Setting criteria for researching in the classroom 1) Setting criteria for 'good' teaching 2) Lesson plan as a standard for evaluating a lesson in the classroom 3) The importance of 'principled' instruction
  5. Exploring the classroom (1) 1) Examining teachers and teaching 2) Taking a field-note 3) Qualitative approaches to the data analysis 4) Quantitaitve analyses of the data: i) establishing measurement units, ii) frequency count
  6. Exploring the classroom (2) 1) Examining language use in the classroom 2) Use of metalanguage 3) Language of questions
  7. Exploring the classroom (3) 1) Examining language use in the classroom (continued) 2) The language of feedback to error 3) The language for negotiation of meaning
  8. Taking a closer look at the data 1) Usefulness and limitations of transcription 2) Using an obseration instrument - COLT
  9. Taking a closer look at the data (2) 1) Using an obseration instrument - FOCUS 2) Classroom discourse analysis
  10. Identifying problems 1) Lesson breakdowns 2) Why does the lesson go wrong, and how can it be repaired?
  11. Identifying problems 1) Observing the quality of teaching 2) Elicitation techniques 3) Giving instructions 4) Managing errors
  12. Solving the problems 1) Classroom management 2) Managing classroom interaction patterns 3) Managing pair and group work 4) Managing timing and pace
  13. How to examine the 'unobservables' in the classroom 1) How to ensure whether or not the learner has learned what the teacher has taught 2) Uptake recall chart 3) Self-assessment by the learner
  14. Idea-sharing session on what has been covered during the course
