概要
Learning about countries is not sufficient to understand the world deeply. Some regions and communities cover an area beyond the international borders. Also, nations of Indigenous peoples exist in many countries. Knowledge about such places and peoples helps us realize the complexity, variety, and sociocultural richness of the world. In this course, students read various articles mainly about Indigenous nations and communities on the borderlands and on the geographical margin of the national territory. These articles help students acquire alternative perspectives to understand the issues in a globalized world. Due to the instructor’s specialization, the geographical focus of this course is the American continents and the Pacific, mainly the U.S. territory such as Hawaii. This course’s geographical focus might not be in the same countries and areas where students plan to conduct their research projects. However, by using these case studies as examples, I expect each student to realize the plural histories, societies, cultures, and peoples who exist in a country. Moreover, I expect each student to start imagining how they can cover issues of marginalized communities and peoples in their future projects. As a part of this course, students will have opportunities to join in special guest lectures taught by specialists in this field. The content, schedule, and textbooks of this course might be modified based on the students' interests and prior experiences of learning the issues taken up in this course. All changes on this course will be announced on the Moodle page and in the class. Some additional information will be announced in the first week of the course. If you have any questions you need to ask before registering for the class, please contact the course instructor by email or the Moodle message.
