概要

Many academic research projects have contributed to improving social problems. However, they have also brought harm to various individuals and communities for centuries. It has happened in many places globally, including Indigenous communities in North America and the islands in the Pacific Ocean (such as Hawaii). Students read various articles Indigenous researchers, leaders, and their allies have written in this course. These articles explain what academic research meant for Indigenous peoples and their communities. Moreover, these articles provide some ideas regarding designing collaborative research with the local people and their communities. This course’s geographical focus (North America and the Pacific islands) might not be the same countries and areas where students plan to conduct their research projects. Also, not many students would focus mainly on issues surrounding Indigenous people. However, I expect students to find out how they would conduct inclusive and collaborative research in a location of their interest by referring to these case studies as examples. As a part of this course, students will have opportunities to join in special guest lectures taught by specialists in this field. The content, schedule, and textbooks of this course might be modified based on the students' interests and prior experiences of learning the issues taken up in this course. All changes to this course will be announced on the Moodle page and in the class. Some additional information will be announced in the first week of the course. If you have any questions you need to ask before registering for the class, please contact the course instructor by email or the Moodle message.
