HUMAN SECURITY AND PEACEBUILDING

概要

This course uses different modes, including lecture, discussion, presentation, case studies and report writing to analyze contemporary world issues using international law and international mechanisms. The focus is on the protection of individuals by international machinery, cutting across implementation of public international law, peace operations, humanitarian intervention and peacebuilding. It is designed for students who are not familiar with international law but interested in international affairs, but depending on the level of the students, its content can be modified according to registered students' interest.

目標

This course aims at providing foundation of public international law and mechanisms related to protection of individuals and at enabling students to discuss international solutions to contemporary world issues. In particular, it covers international human rights law, international humanitarian law, refugee law, international criminal law and protection of civilians in the context of peace operations, as well as their implementation.

授業外の学習

Reading class materials from the weekly reading list before the class (110 minutes). Preparation for answering discussion questions (80 minutes). Plus preparation for presentation. Students are expected to make one presentation during the course. Final report.
