概要

For students and practitioners in the field of international cooperation and development, formulating and writing up their own research is crucial to implement programs or develop policies for international development work. This course is a foundational course focusing on research methods and study designs that are common in social science fields. The course will cover two complementary topics: research design and academic writing. During research design classes, students will learn basic concepts in social science methods and common types of study designs, including quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods approaches. Students will read a series of academic journal articles, choose their own research topic, and practice developing research questions as well as appropriate methodology. In academic writing classes, students will learn how to write using an academic lens by developing their own research proposal. This course is 9 days-intensive course (9/28, 10/2, 10/5, 10/9, 10/12, 10/16, 10/19, 10/23, 10/26). The class does not teach technical knowledge or statistical methods necessary for quantitative data analysis.

目標

The objectives of this course include 1) understanding the foundation of social science research designs, such as quantitative, qualitative and mixed method approaches, and 2) understanding the basic steps involved in developing a research study and academic writing. Students will also 3) hone important research skills including identifying relevant literature using various data resources and writing a literature review. At the end of this course, students should be able to outline a research proposal to study their chosen topic of interest. Finally, students will also 4) practice academic communication by exchanging their ideas with classmates, giving constructive feedback to others, and presenting their final project to classmates at the end of the course.

授業外の学習

Students are required to read the assigned chapters of the textbook prior to class (70 min). Students will need to conduct literature searches to identify multiple papers and compile the existing literature on their topic of interest (120min). For the preparation of the final presentation including several annotated literature reviews (190 min) will be required.
