In the latter half of the quarter, the students will make a case study on a strategy/plan for the Implementation of SDGs by a country, a city or a private company. In the 14th class, the students will present their studies and discuss on the outcomes. This will count for 30 % of the evaluation. Depending on the number of students registered, this work may become a group work.

概要
This course will examine the major conceptual framework of sustainable development and some case studies. At the same time, there have been some issues which have occurred unexpectedly in recent years, disturbing multilateralism. Therefore, the course will first look into the current debate at the United Nations and see a new process evolving. The course will also look at its relationship with the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development. Second, the course will consider the current state of the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development, focusing on the SDG Summit held last year (2023). After having considered the current debate both at the United Nations and in the process for the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development, the course will study the evolution of sustainable development at the United Nations and the global process that led to the creation and the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals as a framework for the development agenda. The course will examine the impact of that sift of the concept of development. The course will then study how the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is being implemented, using the case studies of the strategies and policies of selected countries and cities. Finally, the students will be conducting to make a case study on the strategy/plan on the implementation of SDGs by a country/ a city/ a private company. Depending on the number of the students registered, this may become a group work.
目標
The students are expected to: 1. Learn the concept of sustainable development; 2. Deepen the understanding of the Sustainable Development Goals; and 3. Deepen the understanding on the current debate at the United Nations and its relationship with the process of the SDGs.
授業外の学習
The PowerPoint slides that will be used in the classes and some key references will be posted in the Moodle before each class. Students are expected to study them beforehand. After each class, the references that appeared in the class may be added. The reference materials are mainly the official documents of the United Nations or other agencies of the UN system and they are normally available on their websites. The links and references will be provided in the Moodle and the students are requested to download them and study before and after the classes. For each lecture, students are expected to do the following study (190 minutes per lecture in total). • Preparation of the lecture materials and work on assignments in advance (60 min.) • Respond to the questions in the Comment Box in Moodle (50 min.) • Review the content, focusing on problems that were not understood or answered in the previous lecture and together with the above point, submit the comment sheet (60 min.) Since there are two lectures per week, students are expected to do twice as much as shown above per week. It is expected that one comment sheet will be submitted per week.
