概要

This course is the seminar type; the students are required to read reading materials for each course, and the instructor and students will have active discussion on the challenges of mediation during armed conflicts and post-conflict peacebuilding. The students will start reading the first textbook, "Challenges of Constructing Legitimacy in Peacebuilding: Afghanistan, Iraq, Sierra Leone, and East Timor" (Routledge 2016) which the instructor published.Then, instructor will use the second textbook, "Inclusivity in Mediation and Peacebuilding" (Edward Elgar 2022); the instructor also will share his latest field research, including ones on South Sudan, Afghanistan, the War in Ukraine, and the conflict in Gaza.

目標

The purpose of this course is to obtain basic theoretical and empirical understanding on mediation during armed conflicts and post-conflict peacebuilding in order to end the wars in 21 century and create sustainable peace.

  1. Guidance of the courses, evaluations, etc.
  2. Introduction of the first textbook, "Challenges of Constructing Legitimacy in Peacebuilding" (Routledge 2016). Page 1-11.
  3. Chapter 1 of "Challenges of Constucting Legitimacy" (Theories of constructing legitimacy in peacebuilding)
  4. Chapter 2 of "Challenges of Constructing Legitimacy" (Failure of disarmament program in Afghanistan.)
  5. Chapter 3 of "Challenges of Constructing Legitimacy" (Challenges of Reconciliation in Afghanistan.) I will also explore my own commitment to reconciliation in Afghanistan as UN team leader for reconciliation and reintegration in Afghanistan from 2009 to 2010,
  6. Latest development of Afghan peace processes, including the collapse of the previous Afghan government in 2021 and take-over by the Taliban, as well as humanitarian crisis by economic sanction of the US. I will also explain my latest visit to Afghanistan in 2023 as UNDP senior peacebuilding consultant.
  7. Chapter 4 of "Challenges of Constructing Legitimacy " (Cases of Sierra Leone and East Timor).
  8. Chapter 1 (Introduction) of "Inclusivity in Mediation and Peacebuilding" (Edward Elgar)
  9. Chapter 2 (Theory Part) of "Inclusivity in Mediation and Peacebuilding"
  10. Chapter 3 of "Inclusivity in Mediation and Peacebuilding" (Peacebuilding in South Sudan)
  11. Latest field research by instructor on South Sudan, including field research in 2023 and 2024 in South Sudan
  12. Chapter 5 of "Inclusivity in Mediation and Peacebuilding" (Mediation on Syria)
  13. Instructor's lecture on how to end the war in Ukraine, based on his publications in both English and the Japanese on this issue
  14. Conclusion of the seminar, including possible solution for the conflict in Gaza

教科書

I hope you would buy the text book "Challenges of Constructing Legitimacy" from Kinokuniya at Sophia University. If it is difficult, you may borrow the text from Sophia Library. You could borrow the second text, "Inclusivity in Mediation and Peacebuilding" from Sophia University Library. With regard to the academic articles, I will share them with students by the Moodle.
