概要
These courses prepare students to use English in specialist professions. Students will be able to learn the specific language used to carry out the duties of that particular profession. Students will also develop their skills in order to conduct the duties in the respective professions in English. この科目群では,専門的な職業分野で使用される英語を学び,仕事を円滑に行うための英語スキルを身につけていきます。 On this introductory course, you will learn the basic skills and knowledge relevant to the field of translations. You will focus on practical techniques that are used in understanding texts, using a dictionary and thesaurus and other on-line resources to successfully translate the text you are given. この入門コースでは,翻訳に必要な基本スキルと知識を身につけます。原文を理解し,辞書や類語辞典,その他オンライン・リソースを用いて,的確に翻訳を行うための実践的な技術を学びます。 In this course students will read and translate various articles on Kazuo Ishiguro. Also, they will learn about the writer and his historical background. They will be required to read (and watch) some of his works and give their opinions on them. Weekly assignment 1 ・Students will watch Kazuo Ishiguro's interviews and read articles on him and his works. They will be required to answer questions on them in the class. Weekly assignment 2 ・Students will translate Kazuo Ishiguro's interviews and articles on him into Japanese. In the final assignment, students will choose one article from the BBC website and translate the article using the translation techniques they acquired in the course.
目標
The objective of this course is to deepen the understanding of Kazuo Ishiguro's works and to learn the techniques necessary for translation. The class focuses on reading, but class activities also include listening and speaking. This course is for anyone who is interested in translation. Motivation and commitment are the most important factors to be enrolled and to be successful in the class.
授業外の学習
Based on the content of the syllabus and textbook materials, students will be asked to preview/review the lessons. Homework in connection to the lessons will be given every week. シラバスの内容や教科書資料をもとに,授業の予習・復習をしていただきます。 レッスンに関連した宿題が毎週出されます。 Every week students will be required to watch (or listen to) Ishiguro’s interviews and read articles on Ishiguro. They will have to answer questions (the questions will be uploaded on moodle) on them. Also, they will need to translate the interviews and the articles and submit the translation. They need to spend a lot of time (at least 3 hours) on the assignments . (課題の量は多いです。)
