概要
On this course, you will apply the study skills you developed in Academic Communication 1 to study an academic subject or topic. You will be able to deepen your understanding about a topic/subject and further develop your knowledge, language and critical thinking skills. You will develop the critical thinking skills you need to read about academic content critically and be able to discuss it. You will learn to use your critical thinking skills and practice applying those by closely examining a variety of texts on which you will write short summaries or reactions. Through this process, you will also reflect on your own thinking processes and skills. Most in-class work will be based around discussions of the various texts and topics, with input and guidance from the teacher on academic discussion skills. You will also learn how to demonstrate their critical thinking skills in their presentations related to a topic. You will receive input on the critical reading and discussion skills practice of discussions, and peer feedback and feedback from the teacher. You will learn to read academic texts related to the topic of the course effectively. You will be able to learn how to read different types of texts such as academic journal articles, essays, and news articles. You will read for the purpose of understanding academic content in order to be able to participate in a discussion and make a presentation related to your research project. This course will explore the topic of cultural diversity around the world. Specifically, we will discuss the concept of cultural iceberg and deep culture, focusing on how cultural beliefs and attitudes affect human behavior. We will also debate hot topics and learn how to adapt to new cultural contexts.
目標
Course objectives The objectives of this course are to use the core skills below to develop students’ thinking and to discuss effectively in academic discussions and presentations. You will be able to: 1. identify arguments and theories in articles/reading materials. 2. identify assumptions in the sources of the reading materials and in your own and your classmates’ thinking. 3. evaluate credibility of arguments and theories. 4. critically reflect on your own thinking skills. 5. produce arguments based on sound reasoning. 6. apply the above thinking skills in discussions and presentations. 7. develop ability to participate effectively and confidently in academic discussions. In addition: 8. expand your understanding about deep culture. 9. enhance debate skills. 10. practice research skills.
授業外の学習
Based on the content of the syllabus and textbook materials, students will be asked to preview/review the lessons. Homework in connection to the lessons will be given every week. Homework will include but not limited to submitting weekly reflections, conducting an observation outside of class, writing a reflection essay, researching information for a debate, and preparing for a presentation. Homework should take around 45 minutes.
