概要

On this course, you will apply the study skills you developed in Academic Communication1 to study an academic subject or topic. You will be able to deepen your understanding about a topic and further develop your knowledge, language and critical thinking skills. Migration, a complex and dynamic phenomenon, is one of the defining characteristics of contemporary global societies. And in this age of migration, language surfaces as among the central issues of human mobility. In this course, students are introduced to the various language issues confronted by migrants around the world. In discussing these issues, students further hone their academic language skills, both oral and written. Students are thus engaged in academic discourses on language and migration and are given an opportunity to enter into these discussions both in speech and writing.

目標

On this course, you will use the skills you learned in AC1 to listen and read about a particular topic which will be covered in class. You will also be able to talk and write effectively in English about what you have learned. You will be guided to think academically about the topic with a focus on critical thinking. At the end of this course, students are those who are able to: (a) competently explain the role and importance of language in the context of migration; (b) comprehensively discuss the principles of migration linguistics as a way of understanding language issues of migrants; (c) sufficiently develop a descriptive/expository essay on social and psychological dimensions of language in migration; (d) adequately write an argumentative essay in support of an opinion in relation to language issues across migrant categories; (e) creatively make an advocacy campaign video on the linguistic rights of migrants and the appropriate policies and programs corresponding these rights; (f) effectively delivery a lecture on their topic of choice in migration linguistics.

授業外の学習

Homework is given regularly to help you review the class contents, and learn how to find materials for your own study. Students will be required to prepare materials which are necessary in the completion of tasks in class.
