詳細情報
概要
On this course, you will apply the study skills you developed in Academic Communication1 to study an academic subject or topic. You will be able to deepen your understanding about a topic and further develop your knowledge, language and critical thinking skills. We will learn to apply critical thinking skills to current events and their coverage as we read, discuss and debate current issues both in, and about, the News and media. You will have an opportunity to present on and lead a debate about a current issue in the News during a group presentation. You will also have an opportunity to explore an issue further through writing a research paper on a topic of your choice. Finally, you will be able to present your research paper to your classmates in a presentation.
目標
On this course, you will use the skills you learned in AC1 to listen and read about a particular topic which will be covered in class. You will also be able to talk and write effectively in English about what you have learned. You will be guided to think academically about the topic with a focus on critical thinking. Upon completion of the course, students will be able to think critically about, discuss and present their ideas on both current events in the News, and the media in general. Students will also be able to identify different types of news articles, recognize bias in reporting, examine media sources for credibility and will become much more savvy media consumers.
授業外の学習
Homework is given regularly to help you review the class contents, and learn how to find materials for your own study. In addition to weekly vocabulary notebook entries, students will be expected to read news articles in English to prepare for classmates weekly presentations, as well as outside readings assigned by the instructor. Students will also be asked to prepare for regular checking of major assignments (e.g. essays, presentations), and other tasks given at the discretion of the instructor.
