ACADEMIC COMMUNICATION 1 (ADVANCED I)*

概要

On this course you will learn the English you need to study effectively in an international academic environment. The course is offered at Advanced level. The language of instruction is English. You will learn how to study effectively using all four skills, listening, speaking, reading and writing. You will produce your own written and oral work in connection with the topics dealt with in class.

目標

On this course, you will learn how to write a summary, based on articles related to an academic topic dealt with on the course. You can listen to a 20 minute lecture and make notes about the main points. You will be guided to skim and scan texts of around 1000 words and read in order to understand the gist of the content and report it verbally. You will learn how to write academic texts of 300-400 words, using the correct academic conventions, and focus on paragraph structures. You will also learn how to edit your texts making use of your dictionaries, grammar books and other online resources. You will also learn how to take part in a 10 minute academic panel discussion and present an argument logically using appropriate academic language.

授業外の学習

Based on the content of the syllabus and textbook materials, students will be asked to preview/review the lessons. Homework in connection to the lessons will be given every week. Homework is given regularly to help you review the class contents, and learn how to find materials for your own study . It is issued periodically to set personal achievement goals. At least 45 minutes for each lesson, each week should be allowed for homework. You will usually be expected to do things like; prepare for the next class by reading or formulating ideas to share with classmates, reflect on the previous class, edit and proofread writing, keep a journal for vocabulary and participate in discussions on Moodle.
