概要

On this course, you will apply the study skills you developed in Academic Communication 1 to study an academic subject or topic. You will be able to deepen your understanding about a topic and further develop your knowledge, language and critical thinking skills. This course will focus on the issues of racial discrimination against African American people in the US. We will read some literary works of Richard Wright, Ralph Ellison and James Baldwin and discuss how these writers approach the issues and present them differently in their works. Throughout the course, we will deepen our knowledge of racial discrimination and develop critical views on the relevant issues.

目標

On this course, you will use the skills you learned in AC1 to listen and read about a particular topic which will be covered in class. You will also be able to talk and write effectively in English about what you have learned. You will be guided to think academically about the topic with a focus on critical thinking. 1. You will be guided to read authentic texts and analyze them. 2. You will examine the plots, narrative styles and themes of the texts. 3. You will speak about the texts and discuss the issues presented in the texts. 4. You will develop critical views on the issues of racial discrimination. 5. You will conduct research and give two presentations on the related topics.

授業外の学習

Based on the content of the syllabus and textbook materials, students will be asked to preview/review the lessons. Homework in connection to the lessons will be given every week. You will be expected to (1) preview and review vocabulary (2) read texts and take quizzes (3) do listening practice (4) complete writing assignments (5) prepare for group discussion Time required: approximately 45 minutes for each class
