概要

On this course, you will apply the study skills you developed in Academic Communication 1 to study an academic subject or topic. You will be able to deepen your understanding about a topic and further develop your knowledge, language and critical thinking skills. This course will explore a specific academic topic known as English as a Lingua Franca (ELF). A 'lingua franca' refers to a shared language used by people who have different native languages. English is commonly used as a lingua franca, especially among non-native English speakers. In such cases, non-native speakers often employ creative English expressions and strategies to communicate effectively. Throughout this course, you will learn about the evolution of English as a widely used lingua franca, how it has evolved over time, the global users of English, and how English is currently used in diverse contexts.

目標

On this course, you will use the skills you learned in AC1 to listen and read about a particular topic which will be covered in class. You will also be able to talk and write effectively in English about what you have learned. You will be guided to think academically about the topic with a focus on critical thinking. This course focuses on four main objectives: (1) Enhancing comprehension of academic English in both written and spoken forms. (2) Developing the ability to express personal opinions effectively in English. (3) Building confidence in delivering presentations in English. (4) Gaining an understanding of English as a lingua franca and applying this knowledge to your language learning journey.

授業外の学習

Based on the content of the syllabus and textbook materials, students will be asked to preview/review the lessons. Homework in connection to the lessons will be given every week. You will receive homework assignments regularly, typically involving reading passages from the textbook or other assigned reading materials before each class (20 min.). Your homework may include preparing your opinions on the readings and summarizing their content for discussion in class (25 min.).
