概要
On this course you will learn the English you need to study effectively in an international academic environment. The course is offered at Upper Intermediate level. The language of instruction is English. You will learn how to study effectively using all four skills, listening, speaking, reading and writing. You will produce your own written and oral work in connection with the topics dealt with in class. On this course, you will learn and deepen understanding of the various topics through watching TED talks, reading the related materials, and discussing topics. You will also have opportunities to make oral presentations of an academic nature in English.
目標
On this course, you will learn how to write a summary, based on a text related to an academic topic dealt with on the course. You will listen to and be able to comprehend a 10 minute intermediate level lecture and make notes about the main points. You will be guided to skim and scan a text of over 500 words in order to understand the gist of the content and report it verbally. You will learn how to write reading reports of around 300-400 words using the correct academic conventions, and focus on paragraph structures. You will also learn how to edit your reports by making use of your dictionaries, grammar books and other online resources. You will also learn how to take part in a 10 minute academic presentation and present an argument logically using appropriate academic language. This course aims in particular for you to: 1. get used to using English as a means of studying topics/subjects 2. read academic texts 3. understand lectures/talks 4. discuss academic topics critically with supporting evidence 5. develop confidence in expressing your opinion referring to reliable data
授業外の学習
Homework is given regularly to help you review the class contents, and learn how to find materials for your own study. You need to spend the same amount of time as the lesson itself for self-study (preview and review). For the purpose of consolidation, you will read the transcripts of the lectures to check your comprehension. You will be asked to prepare and explain about a topic covered in class. You will also be asked to write essays assigned during the course. You will be preparing for your presentations.
