概要
On this course, you will apply the study skills you developed in Academic Communication 1 to study an academic subject or topic. You will be able to deepen your understanding about a topic and further develop your knowledge, language and critical thinking skills. The Relationship Between UK and US English is a linguistics-based course investigating the development of and connection between different varieties of English. As well as British and American English, the course examines a range of English varieties, including World Englishes. Through lectures, book chapters, various media resources, and meaningful discussion, students will learn about the historical development of the language, the linguistic underpinnings, and the social dimensions. They will also critically examine attitudes and stereotypes and gain an awareness of appropriate usage that should prove useful during intercultural communication. Ultimately, the aim of the course is to highlight the robustness of the English language in facilitating such wide growth and diversity, and to celebrate these variations rather than judge one variety as superior or inferior to another. Materials include books by linguists and other experts in the field, TED talks, video clips and a number of other written and audio resources.
目標
On this course, you will use the skills you learned in AC1 to listen and read about a particular topic which will be covered in class. You will also be able to talk and write effectively in English about what you have learned. You will be guided to think academically about the topic with a focus on critical thinking. On this course, you will use the skills you learned in AC1 to achieve the following objectives: Investigate and evaluate attitudes to British and American English and some of the non-standard dialects within each. Recognize and read different text types and genres and apply appropriate reading skills to efficiently access specific information. Gain awareness of some of the pragmatic differences between American and British English, specifically, politeness strategies and communication style. Broaden your formal and informal English vocabulary, both spoken and written. Improve your pronunciation and awareness of the oral mechanics involved in successful production of challenging phonemes like /r/. Sharpen your listening skills, e.g. when differentiating between different accents. Strengthen your critical thinking and discussion skills by examining and challenging stereotypes associated with and within each culture.
