概要

On this course, you will apply the study skills you developed in Academic Communication 1 to study an academic subject or topic. You will be able to deepen your understanding about a topic and further develop your knowledge, language and critical thinking skills. When asked what they want out of their life, many people may respond that they want to be happy. But what is our happiness as human beings, really? In this course, we will discuss this question and consider components of happiness from a perspective of Individual Psychology a.k.a., Adlerian Psychology founded by Alfred Adler. The course unfolds by examining technical terms and expressions used in the field, while relating them to our day-to-day real-life experiences.

On this course, you will use the skills you learned in AC1 to listen and read about a particular topic which will be covered in class. You will also be able to talk and write effectively in English about what you have learned. You will be guided to think academically about the topic with a focus on critical thinking. The course aims for not just imparting academic knowledge but cultivating hopefully useful insights for each student in navigating his/her life and relationships through dialogues.

Based on the content of the syllabus and textbook materials, students will be asked to preview/review the lessons. Homework in connection to the lessons will be given every week. As main assignments, the students will be required to (1) participate in in- and out-of-class discussions actively: 10 minutes (2) prepare written summaries of reading/video materials when assigned: 25 minutes (3) keep a journal that tracks a train of thoughts and feelings throughout the course: 10 minutes
