ACADEMIC COMMUNICATION 2 (INTERMEDIATE II)*

概要

On this course, you will apply the study skills you developed in Academic Communication 1 to study an academic subject or topic. You will be able to deepen your understanding about a topic and further develop your knowledge, language and critical thinking skills. On this course, you will continue to learn how to write an academic essay and give an academic presentation. However, in the fall semester, it will be a more content-based course, focusing on the topics related to “British Culture and Society”. (You will be using a lot of the study skills you learnt in the spring semester.) These are some of the activities you are to be engaged in class. 1. You will exchange opinions and have an intense discussion on the topic. 2. You will learn to write a research paper, organizing information from multiple sources. 3. You will watch news clips from BBC. It will not be used just to improve your listening skills, but it will be used for a more content-based learning, that is, to make further research on the topic. The main topics (and content) of the news will only be an introduction (or a hint) to lead you to a more highly academic study. You will need to search for other materials for more detailed information and better argument. The topics will be on current social issues of Britain or on British culture. Supplementary reading materials will be given in class. 4. You will write a long academic essay and give a group presentation.

目標

On this course, you will use the skills you learned in AC1 to listen and read about a particular topic which will be covered in class. You will also be able to talk and write effectively in English about what you have learned. You will be guided to think academically about the topic with a focus on critical thinking. You will learn to (a) write a well-organized and well-argued essay on a given academic topic (b) listen to a program and summarize the main points (c) express your ideas in an academic discussion and (d) give an academic presentation.

授業外の学習

Based on the content of the syllabus and textbook materials, students will be asked to preview/review the lessons. Homework in connection to the lessons will be given every week. 1. You will be asked to write a long academic essay and give a group presentation. You will be asked to prepare your draft and revise it. 2. Occasionally, you will make a research on the topic (look for other materials related to the topic, summarize, and organize the information.) Also, you will need to look for materials that would support or oppose to your ideas. 3. You need to be well-prepared before class (thoroughly check the content and the meaning of the reading materials).
