概要

On this course, you will apply the study skills you developed in Academic Communication1 to study an academic subject or topic. You will be able to deepen your understanding about a topic and further develop your knowledge, language and critical thinking skills. We'll learn how to give great presentations by watching TED talks. By the end of the semester, each student will give their own TED-style speech without reading from a script. We'll work together to share ideas and talk with classmates to make sure our presentations are interesting and worth listening to.

目標

On this course, you will use the skills you learned in AC1 to listen and read about a particular topic which will be covered in class. You will also be able to talk and write effectively in English about what you have learned. You will be guided to think academically about the topic with a focus on critical thinking. The main target of the course is to gain insights on how to make your presentation worth listening to and to plan a presentation incorporating your findings from TED talks.

授業外の学習

Based on the content of the syllabus and textbook materials, students will be asked to preview/review the lessons. Homework in connection to the lessons will be given every week. Students will be required to watch TED, take notes, and be ready for group discussions in class. You will experience two types of presentations: a group presentation and an individual presentation. You and your groupmates may need some time to prepare together outside of the class. In addition, you will write some paragraphs on given topics and an essay. You will be asked to write outlines, and drafts and review your classmates' essays. Time allocation for the work expected outside the class: It differs depending on the lesson. For instance, you will be expected to use 45 minutes or more to write an outline for one day, or watch a TED talk about 10 minutes and take notes about the gist of the presentation for another day. The details of assignments will be announced in each lesson.
