概要

On this course, you will apply the study skills you developed in Academic Communication1 to study an academic subject or topic. You will be able to deepen your understanding about a topic and further develop your knowledge, language and critical thinking skills. Students in this course will think about how language works. By learning about developments in the philosophy of language and literary theory since the 20th century, we will consider the roles of author, text, and reader in relation to meaning; the potential of language to generate a plurality of meaning; the role of the community in interpretation; and the interrelationship of texts in the generation of meaning. The second half of the class will focus on intertextuality. We will consider examples from a variety of sources, including Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, films and television, and internet culture. Students will learn how to do research and how to present their research in writing and orally.

目標

On this course, you will use the skills you learned in AC1 to listen and read about a particular topic which will be covered in class. You will also be able to talk and write effectively in English about what you have learned. You will be guided to think academically about the topic with a focus on critical thinking. By completion of this course, students will be able to: (1) Explain in speaking/writing about the functions of language and how language is used with reference to basic concepts from the philosophy of language. (2) Analyze how interpretation of texts, such as texts from literature, is affected by other texts. (3) Present the results of individual research both in writing and orally. (4) Improve critical thinking abilities and proficiency in academic English.

授業外の学習

Based on the content of the syllabus and textbook materials, students will be asked to preview/review the lessons. Homework in connection to the lessons will be given every week. Students will - Read reading materials to be discussed in class. - Complete homework assignments and prepare for class discussion based on the class readings using the questions provided by the instructor. - Write an essay on the relationship of two texts of choice (e.g., from literature, pop culture, etc.) and how this relationship affects meaning/interpretation. - Give oral presentations. Each student will give two presentations during the semester based on class readings. Each student will also give a final presentation on the student's essay project.
