ACADEMIC COMMUNICATION 2 (ELEMENTARY)*

概要

On this course, you will apply the study skills you developed in Academic Communication1 to study an academic subject or topic. You will be able to deepen your understanding about a topic and further develop your knowledge, language and critical thinking skills. このコースではAcademic Communication1 で学んだ学習スキルを使ってアカデミックな科目,或はトピックについて学びます。トピックについての知識と言葉とクリティカル・シンキングスキルをさらに伸ばしていきます。 In the fall semester, you will read articles from The New York Times, The BBC, etc, and watch videos online of TED speeches, to deepen your knowledge and express your own opinions in discussions, debates, essays and presentations, etc. about these 5 topics: 【Criminal Justice System】, 【Babies by Design】, 【The Challenged】, 【Immigration】 and 【Globalization】, using the skills you have learned in the spring semester. 後期は,The New York TimesやThe BBC,CNNなどを出典とする記事や,オンラインで視聴できるTEDスピーチの映像を用い, 【Criminal Justice System】,【Babies by Design】,【The Challenged】,【Immigration】そして【Globalization】の5つのトピックについて,前期に身につけた技能を活かして,知識を深め,ディスカッションやディベート,エッセイ,プレゼンテーション等において自分の意見を言えるようにします。 When it comes to the time for the class, start doing a quiz about the assigned reading/ listening materials (10:55-11:25) and check the teacher's feedback on Moodle (11:25-11:40). After that, there is a further explanation about the quiz and you may ask questions about it. Also, we will have group and then classroom discussions about the assigned discussion question in class. Meanwhile, a debate continues during the period: group sessions, presentations by chosen representatives in class and finally, the judgement for the winner of the debate. 始業時間になったらMoodle上で指定された記事やビデオについてのクイズを受験し(10:55から11:25まで),各自答え合わせをしてください(11:25から11:40まで)。その後,クイズについての詳しい解説をし,質問も受け付けます。また最初にグループで,次にクラス全体で事前に指定された質問についてのディスカッションも行います。一方でディベートは時間で区切らず,グループ・セッション,選ばれた代表者によるクラス全体への発表,最後に勝者の判定をします。

目標

On this course, you will use the skills you learned in AC1 to listen and read about a particular topic which will be covered in class. You will also be able to talk and write effectively in English about what you have learned. You will be guided to think academically about the topic with a focus on critical thinking. このコースではAC1で学んだスキルを使って,授業で扱うトピックについて話を聞き,記事などを読みます。こうして学習したことについて効果的に話し,またエッセイにまとめます。また扱われるトピックについて学術的に,かつ批判的に考える技術も学びます。 You will deepen your knowledge and have your own opinion about these topics above, through reading articles, watching videos, discussions, debates, essays and presentations. 上記のトピックについて,記事の読解やビデオ視聴,ディスカッション,ディベート,エッセイ,プレゼンテーションを通じて,知識を深め,自分の意見を言えるようにします。

授業外の学習

Based on the content of the syllabus and textbook materials, students will be asked to preview/review the lessons. Homework in connection to the lessons will be given every week. シラバスの内容や教科書資料をもとに,授業の予習・復習をしていただきます。 レッスンに関連した宿題が毎週出されます。 You are required to read the assigned articles, looking up the words and phrases you don't know in a dictionary, answer the following questions, and think of your answer to the assigned discussion question before coming to the class. After leaning the controversial issues about the topic, you will be divided into pros/ cons and prepare presentations. Later in the semester, you will write an essay about one of these topics of your choice . 予習としてわからない単語やフレーズを辞書で引きながら事前に指定された記事を読み,またビデオを視聴し,トピックについてのディスカッション・クエスチョンの答えを準備をしておくことが求められます。トピックにまつわる争点を学習した後,賛成派と反対派に分かれてプレゼンテーションを準備します。学期末には扱ったトピックの一つを選んでエッセイを書いて提出します。
