概要

In this course, students will develop their academic writing skills using a four skills integrated approach to well-equip them to write essays and research papers for undergraduate classes in English. The course will take a task-based, learning through doing approach to writing, starting from finding and evaluating academic sources and developing research questions, through to editing and discussing written work in seminar-style classes. Students will write about topics related to modern society in Japan which interest them. Classes will consist of input on academic writing skills from the teacher, in-class writing exercises and practice, teacher and peer feedback on students’ written work, and presentation and discussion of students’ assignments.

1.Develop the ability to effectively find, select and evaluate academic material 2.Develop the ability to effectively summarise, analyse and synthesise new information and ideas 3.Develop the ability to write argumentatively as well as descriptively 4.Improve language skills and clarity in writing, (e.g. control of grammar and punctuation, vocabulary choice) 5.Improve understanding of academic writing conventions and develop the ability to produce written work which conforms to APA style

授業外の学習

Based on the content of the syllabus and textbook materials, students will be asked to preview/review the lessons. Homework in connection to the lessons will be given every week. Homework will include writing and research assignments in preparation for the upcoming classes. Homework may take around 45 minutes.

  18. ・Knowing when and how to paraphrase, summarise and quote
  19. ・Synthesising ideas from a number of academic sources
  20. ・Using reporting verbs effectively
  21. ・Learning how to develop arguments logically and avoid logical fallacies
  22. ・Writing argumentative essays based on research of 1500-2000 words
  23. ・Using in-text citation and writing reference lists according to APA style
