概要

This course aims to understand international institutions (defined as international frameworks, including international organizations, agreements, and forums among nations) and their relevance to the world order. Students will learn the idea and political environment that are critical to the establishment of international institutions. In particular, this course focuses on the several forms of interaction by political actors in the institution-building process – between states, between state(s) and a specific international institution, and between different international institutions. This course is composed of two parts. The first part is the lecture series (details are explained in the first class). The latter part is provided for the students to do role-playing by the group in the selected international organizations. Please note that the play is not entirely the same as what is called as "model-UN", for example. Each student (or group of students) needs to analyze the essence of competition among the states in the international arena of conflict. Details are instructed in the first class. The course schedule may change depending on the number of students.

目標

Students will be familiar with the analytical perspective in understanding international institutions, based on theories of international relations (political science).

授業外の学習

English is the working language in this course. Therefore, students are expected to read, listen, write, and speak on international affairs in English. Daily practice to improve the linguistic skill is strongly encouraged (such as, for instance, by reading newspaper articles and by listening to the radio/podcast programmes.) The time needed for these works altogether would be about one hour per day.
