概要
Prevailing opinions, such as "Japan is a homogeneous country" or "Racism is an issue elsewhere," persist in Japanese society. This course critically challenges these assumptions by delving into concepts and instances related to race, ethnicity, and "Japaneseness". The course will explore the definitions of ethnicity and race, highlighting their similarities and differences, historical perspectives, and various approaches to understanding them. We will also investigate how these concepts manifest in contemporary society, with a particular focus on Japan. The course encompasses lectures, discussions, documentary viewing, reaction papers, and student presentations, encouraging active participation.
目標
The objectives of this course are: (1) to gain fundamental knowledge of ethnicity and race and (2) to critically analyze and apply this knowledge within the context of Japanese society.
