QUALITATIVE METHODS IN SOCIOLOGY

概要

This class will introduce several methods of qualitative research and guide you through the whole process of carrying out a qualitative research project. We will focus on a common research question, which we will develop together to carry out a small qualitative survey ourselves. This gives you the chance to experience the whole research process hands on and will enable you to best understand the different steps necessary, from developing a research question from theory and the existing literature, selecting a research design, preparing and carrying out semi-structured interviews, transcribing and analyzing the data to presenting the research findings.

By the end of the semester, you will understand the full process of carrying out a qualitative research project: 1. Developing a research question from theory 2. Selecting a research design 3. Preparing the survey (sampling, developing an interview strategy, accessing the field) 4. Transcribing and coding your data 5. Analyzing, and interpreting your data 6. Presenting your findings
