詳細情報
概要
The primary aims of this seminar-style course are twofold: 1) Introduce students to several substantive areas of inquiry within sociology so that students - both with or without sociology backgrounds - can establish a common foundational understanding of and appreciation for the different areas of interests for sociologists, and how sociologists problematize and empirically investigate social phenomena. This is the focus of the first half of the course in which students will read chapters from a sociology text, and in groups, present on the content and facilitate in-class discussion. 2) Apply what was learned in the first half of the course to conduct - in groups - preliminary sociological research on a topic of interest. We will spend the second half of the course on student group project presentations. Although students will present in groups, the final paper (more on this below) is to be written individually. * Students are expected to strive to ensure that this seminar is a safe learning space in which participants mutually respect the contributions of others. Active participation in this small seminar course is paramount; not only is participation evaluated, but it is integral to creating a meaningful and intellectually stimulating classroom experience for all.
