概要
This class introduces students to the discipline of sociology. By studying a broad range of basic sociological concepts, students will learn to use their "sociological imagination". Through discussing real-life examples, students are encouraged to think critically about the social reality they live in and to distinguish between common-sense assumptions and evidence-based reasoning.
目標
By the end of the semester students will have 1) acquired a good foundation of sociological knowledge, 2) learnt how to think like a sociologist, 3) developed a deeper understanding of theory and methods used in social sciences.
授業外の学習
There will be weekly readings from the textbook, which students are expected to prepare thoroughly. In addition, there will be several reaction papers (up to 500 words), a midterm and a final exam. Please reserve about 3 hours per week to prepare for class.
所要時間: At least 190 minutes per session.
