概要
*(This is an advanced English class)* Opinion leaders (= media houses) effectively influence the public opinion of the audience/masses. It goes without saying while expressing one’s freedom of speech or freedom to broadcast in a democracy, the media houses consciously or unconsciously contribute to the misinterpretation of the facts. While the media are flooded with misinterpretation of facts, destroying the foundational values of the media profession, efforts have been made to counter the onslaught of fake news. Over the years, ethics in journalism have provided media professionals with a framework to safeguard basic responsibilities, such as those proposed by Wilbur Shramm and other researchers. In this course, students will watch, analyze and discuss video news reports from around the world and Japan to understand the diverse viewpoints, agendas and reporting styles that broadcasters have and to develop deeper understanding of the international news environment.
