概要

The Department of Japanese Literature offers this series on Japanese culture through the lens of literature in English translation. We follow a course of readings from premodern and early modern (1600-1868) literature, specially selected for their relevance to various aspects of Japanese culture, including relations of production, class struggle, gender and sexuality, and urban versus rural life.

目標

Students will explore the relationship between literature and cultural and material history in premodern Japan, while learning basic skills of close reading and of drawing applications from literature to social, political, economic, and virtual realities of the present day.

授業外の学習

Students will read the assignment for each session (15-25 pages) and write questions and comments on the Moodle discussion board by the night before class, and lectures will be interactive and in dialogue with these Moodle posts. One 2000-word final paper, in English, which may simply discuss the course readings (outside research is optional), is due at the end of term.
