概要

The modern ideals of humanitarianism first emerged in Europe in the nineteenth century and came to exert substantial influence over world politics in the twentieth century. Humanitarianism, a set of ideals for promoting human welfare and upholding human dignity, might be considered as representing a universal value beyond criticism. Yet, in reality, the history of humanitarian ventures involves grave dissensions and power politics over the notion of humanity. This course explores the modern history of humanitarianism through an analysis of the Red Cross movement in the United States and other countries from global perspectives. This course may include students' discussion and presentation on related topics in addition to lecture.
