概要

This course explores the British TV series Downton Abbey. The course gives you the opportunity to learn about and discuss the historical, economic and cultural background to the popular series and deepen your understanding of the programme and British culture. This course will give insights into the social norms and life ‘upstairs’ and ‘downstairs’ inside some of Britain’s great aristocratic houses. There will be some short readings and also some video clips to watch. In class we will work individually, in pairs, and in small groups, before opening out to wider class discussions. We will focus on the content of the course rather than on grammar points. However, the new vocabulary will be explained in context. All explanations will be in English.

目標

Students will complete the course and will have deepened their knowledge of British culture by understanding the cultural and socio-economic context of the historical drama and the social interactions between the characters of Downton Abbey and the social barriers to such interactions. In the end a commonality of being human in an age of rapid change in the early 20th century is revealed.

授業外の学習

Students are expected to make notes and review the course work after class. Students will need to prepare for the next class by doing the assigned homework and by reading the assigned texts. In addition, students will have to do some research using the resources available to them such as the internet and the library. Students will also need to do preparation work for presentations outside of class.
