概要
The theme of this course is to look at how English serves as an international language used around the world, and to examine the social implications of the English language’s position as a ‘hyper-centralised’ lingua franca. In particular, we will examine themes such as social capital, language and identity, and the issue of authenticity in English.
目標
This will be a student-centred course in which everyone will be expected to participate in actively, both in class discussions and in coursework. Each lesson will focus on the social and applied aspects of the English language in use. As part of the course you will be required to write a three-page (1,500 word) essay in English about an aspect of English and Society covered in the course. Participation in classes is also part of the assessment.
授業外の学習
Students will be expected to deepen their knowledge of their chosen topic in preparation for the essay. This will involve doing wider reading and research, as well as collaborating with group members. Reading is an important part of the course in preparing for the seminar classes.
