概要

This class focuses on the learning and studying of English as a foreign language. It is designed to be useful for those wishing to improve their own understanding of how languages are learned in order to be better students, and also for those hoping to work in language education or translation. During the course, we will look at topics of importance to the learning of languages. Special attention is given to the cultural, social and political principles of language use, as the focus of the course is very much on the individual learner within the context of a global society.

目標

During this course, you will learn about some of the most important concepts that are at the centre of language learning. You will be required to reflect on your own learning experiences regularly, and these will form the basis of your final assessments. Ultimately, the objectives of this course are to share insights from the research on English language learning that will make you a better learner and equip you with the knowledge you need to become an effective language user as a member of society.

授業外の学習

Each week students should prepare for the class by downloading and reading the handouts before class, and by doing their own research in order to maximise class time. Near the end of the semester, students will work in focus groups towards assignments that demonstrate their knowledge of the course content, and show that they have met the course aims.
